A data standard is like a language. It ensures everyone is using the same syntax, grammar, and vocabulary so every time they exchange data (CV, grant application, progress report, etc.) all parties can use the data with confidence in its format and semantics. This removes the compatibility problems that arise when, say, a Funder maintains their own data structures in their IT systems and an Institution maintains a different set of data structures.
Benefits of research administration data standards
Research administration data standards establish common practices for the structuring, formatting, and labeling of research administration data.
Open and transparently defined data standards smooth the way for information to be easily stored, exchanged, processed and analysed. Standardized research administration data means anyone can use any system they like to send, receive and process data. It also ensures the accuracy and integrity of the data.
Established data standards mean:
- Researchers maintain one master copy of their data, with easy and reliable re-use of that data,
- Institutions and funders can share data without depending on specific software, platforms, or systems,
- Institutions and funders have greater choice of suppliers for installing interchange and data management systems.
Current Areas of Focus:
CASRAI is currently pursuing the following data standards activities:
- CVs (including document definitions for Academic, Funding, Student, Community and Abridged versions of the same CV)
- Research Projects (including document definitions for all data collected and processed for all stages of the development, granting, reporting life-cycle)
- Research Classification
As the assigned Working Groups release public review versions of the above standards you will find links to each in this area of the website.
