When does switching to hypoallergenic tape actually matter clinically?

Most clearly: elderly patients (age-related thinning of the epidermis and reduced dermal collagen/elastin make skin tears far more likely), corticosteroid- or anticoagulant-thinned skin, neonatal and pediatric patients, dressings that will stay in place for multiple days, and any patient with a documented adhesive reaction. On healthy, intact adult skin for short-term use, standard tape’s stronger hold is often the more practical choice.

Does removal technique matter if hypoallergenic tape is already being used?

Yes — technique matters with both tape types, it just has less margin for error with standard tape. The mechanism of injury (adhesive bonding more strongly to the skin’s outer layer than that layer bonds to the tissue beneath it) applies regardless of adhesive chemistry; gentler adhesive lowers the odds of harm, it doesn’t eliminate the need for careful removal.
