Research software choices are unusually sticky. A reference library, a coded qualitative dataset, or a configured survey instrument represents real accumulated work, and moving it between platforms is often the hardest part of changing tools. That makes the initial selection consequential, and it makes migration guidance as valuable as feature comparison.

Choosing for portability, not just features
The most common regret in research tooling is not choosing a less capable tool; it is choosing a tool whose export path is poor. Before adopting anything that will hold years of accumulated work, the practical questions are whether the data can be exported in a documented open format, whether that export round-trips without loss, and whether the institution holds the licence or the individual does. Regulated environments change the calculus
In regulated research, tool selection is constrained by compliance requirements rather than preference. Systems holding data that supports a regulatory submission may need to satisfy 21 CFR Part 11 requirements for electronic records, audit trails and electronic signatures, and may require formal validation before use.
