Climate-aware funding refers to funder policies and award practices that explicitly build climate and environmental sustainability considerations into eligibility, proposal review, and post-award reporting, rather than treating scientific merit as the only criterion. It is a distinct, broader category than a single requirement like a climate impact statement — that statement is one specific mechanism a climate-aware funding policy might require.
The forms it takes
In practice, climate-aware funding policies combine several mechanisms: requiring a climate impact statement or equivalent section at proposal stage; scoring or weighting environmental sustainability as part of peer review rather than leaving it advisory; requiring justification for particularly high-emission activities such as long-haul travel or energy-intensive computing rather than banning them outright; and mandating environmental reporting during the award, sometimes annually, alongside financial and scientific progress reporting. A smaller number of funders ring-fence dedicated funding for shared sustainability infrastructure, such as consolidated cold storage or low-carbon compute allocation, rather than only imposing requirements on individual grant holders.
Who has moved on this
UK and EU research funders have been particularly active: UKRI is a signatory to the cross-sector Concordat for the Environmental Sustainability of Research and Innovation Practice, hosted by Wellcome with EAUC (the Environmental Association for Universities and Colleges) as secretariat, committing signatories to progressively embed sustainability into practice. Wellcome has its own environmental sustainability policy informing award terms, and Horizon Europe streams increasingly ask for sustainability content within the standard Horizon Europe data management plan structure. Specific eligibility caps, scoring weights, and reporting cadences vary by funder and should be checked against the current call text, not assumed from general policy.
What doesn’t qualify
A purely scientific-merit call with no environmental review criterion at all is not climate-aware funding; nor, in practice, is a one-off tick-box declaration that carries no weight in scoring or eligibility — the defining feature is a genuine, stated effect on funding decisions or reporting, not mere presence in an application form.
