Editorial commentary
An ORCID employment assertion is a record item on an ORCID iD stating that the person was employed by a specific organisation, typically with a start date, optional end date, and a free-text role/title. It is the canonical mechanism for tying an ORCID iD to an institution over time, one of several affiliation types ORCID supports under ‘professional activities’.
Who can add it, and why that matters
An employment record can be self-asserted by the ORCID iD holder, or asserted directly by the employing organisation through ORCID’s Member API. When a registered ‘trusted organisation’ asserts the record, it carries a visible trust marker and is treated as higher-confidence than a self-claim — funders, publishers and research-information systems increasingly rely on organisation-asserted records to verify current affiliation. Disambiguating the organisation
Each record can carry a disambiguated organisation identifier, most commonly a ROR ID, so the employer is unambiguous across name changes, mergers, and language variants rather than relying on free-text institution names.
The role/title field is not standardised
Role/Title is free text, not a controlled vocabulary — ORCID does not map values like ‘postdoc’, ‘research fellow’ or ‘research associate’ to a common taxonomy. Usage genuinely varies by country: UK/Commonwealth institutions commonly treat research associate and research fellow as roughly equivalent postdoctoral titles, while US institutions more often treat research associate or staff scientist as a permanent role distinct from a postdoc. Research offices comparing career stage from title text alone should treat the field as indicative, not authoritative.
How it differs from education, invited position and service
ORCID distinguishes several affiliation types: education covers degree-granting study; employment covers a formal, typically salaried role; invited position covers a formal role (paid or unpaid) at an organisation other than the primary employer, without the full commitment of employment; service covers activities like committee membership or editorial roles.
