Editorial commentary
Alternatives to conventional single-use lab plastics fall into three broad categories: drop-in material substitution (for example a bio-based polymer tube or tip in the same form factor as a polypropylene original), workflow redesign that removes the single-use step altogether (centralised reagent dispensing replacing individually bottled aliquots, or a return-to-glass programme), and supplier-side packaging reduction (bulk shipment, recyclable mono-material packaging, take-back schemes for foam and moulded plastic inserts).
Why lifecycle thinking matters here
Evaluating an alternative on material origin alone is a common trap: a bio-based or compostable plastic can have lower fossil-carbon input but a worse real-world outcome if the region has no access to the industrial composting facility the material actually requires — in that case it is landfilled or incinerated exactly like the conventional plastic it replaced, with the added risk of contaminating a mixed-plastics recycling stream if it is not correctly sorted. A genuine comparison needs to look at the full path — manufacture, transport, in-use performance, and realistic regional end-of-life — not just the feedstock.
How alternatives are evaluated and sourced
My Green Lab’s ACT Ecolabel is the main third-party-verified reference point for comparing laboratory products on standardised environmental criteria, including packaging and, in its current version, product carbon footprint — useful specifically because it removes reliance on a single supplier’s self-reported claim. Sector groups and university green-lab programmes maintain curated lists of alternatives that have actually been trialled against the performance requirements of specific protocols, which is a more reliable filter than a supplier’s own pitch.
What does not count
Swapping one disposable plastic for another single-use plastic with no measured reduction in mass, toxicity, or end-of-life impact is not a genuine alternative; nor is adopting a compostable product where the required composting infrastructure is unavailable regionally — both fail the lifecycle test above.
