What Makes a Podiatry Office’s Supply List Different

Most outpatient specialties stock either procedure consumables or durable bracing,
rarely both at real depth. Podiatry stocks both, plus a diabetic-foot-care program that
touches nearly every visit in a practice with a meaningful diabetic population. That
combination is the actual planning problem: a bracing wall deep enough to fit a range of
foot/ankle presentations without special-ordering every third patient, a procedure tray
system for same-visit nail and skin work, and a standing diabetic-foot screening and

Bracing and Support Inventory for Foot and Ankle Conditions

The bracing wall is the highest-turnover capital category in a podiatry office, and
the planning mistake is stocking one rigidity level per condition instead of a range.
Ankle sprains alone span three grades with different bracing needs — a Grade I
sprain typically does fine with a lace-up or sleeve-style brace, a Grade II often needs a
semi-rigid stirrup brace, and a Grade III may need a walking boot before a brace is even
appropriate. Stocking only mid-range rigidity means either under-bracing a severe sprain
or over-bracing a mild one, and re-ordering mid-week for whichever grade wasn’t on the
shelf. A practical range to keep on hand:

  • Lace-up and sleeve ankle braces for mild instability, post-sprain
    transition-back-to-activity, and chronic mild laxity — the lowest-rigidity, highest
    -turnover tier.
  • Semi-rigid stirrup and lace-up hybrid braces for moderate sprains
    and for patients transitioning out of a walking boot who still need lateral support.
  • Rigid ankle-foot orthoses (AFOs) for chronic instability, post-tendon
    repair support, or drop-foot presentations — lower volume but needs to be on hand
    rather than special-ordered, since these patients are often already mid-treatment when
    the office identifies the need.
  • Night splints (dorsiflexion splints) for plantar fasciitis — a
    high-volume, low-cost item that should be stocked in enough sizes to dispense same-visit,
    since delayed dispensing is a real driver of poor compliance with a treatment that
    already asks a lot of the patient (wearing a splint overnight).
  • Toe splints and spacers for hammertoe, bunion post-op, and digit
    alignment — low cost, high SKU count, easy to under-stock because no single size
    moves fast on its own.
  • Walking boots (CAM boots) in a size range, for fractures, post-op
    non-weight-bearing to partial-weight-bearing transitions, and severe sprains —
    these need to be dispensed the same visit a fracture or severe sprain is diagnosed, not
    ordered and picked up later.
  • Orthotic inserts and arch supports spanning off-the-shelf
    accommodative and semi-rigid functional options, for plantar fasciitis, flat feet, and
    general biomechanical support — stocked separately from the custom-orthotic

Size range matters as much as brace type: a bracing wall stocked only in M/L
under-serves both a pediatric or small-adult foot and a larger patient, and both ends of

Minor In-Office Procedure Supplies

Podiatry runs more same-visit minor procedures than most outpatient specialties:
partial and total nail avulsions, chemical or electrosurgical matrixectomy for recurring
ingrown nails, debridement of calluses and hyperkeratotic tissue, wart (verruca)
treatment, and incision and drainage of superficial abscesses or ulcers. That volume
means the office needs its own dedicated procedure-tray stock, not a shared minor-surgery
kit borrowed from a general exam room:

  • Digital block anesthesia supplies — local anesthetic without
    epinephrine (epinephrine is avoided in digital blocks due to end-artery vasospasm risk in
    the toe), fine-gauge needles, and syringes sized for a controlled, low-volume block.
  • Nail instruments — English anvil nail nippers or podiatry-
    specific nail splitters for avulsion, nail elevators, and curved hemostats for grasping
    and removing the nail plate segment.
  • Matrixectomy supplies — phenol or sodium hydroxide for chemical
    matrixectomy where that’s the chosen technique, plus cotton-tipped applicators sized for
    controlled application in a small nail-fold space.
  • Debridement instruments — #10 and #15 scalpel blades on
    dedicated handles, curettes in a couple of sizes, and callus/corn shavers for routine

    open wounds.

Diabetic-Foot-Care Basics

Diabetic foot care is the category that most distinguishes a podiatry office’s
inventory from a general orthopedic or wound-care setting, because it’s preventive as
much as it is reactive — the goal is catching a problem during a routine screening
visit before it becomes an ulcer, not just stocking supplies to treat one once it exists.

  • Semmes-Weinstein monofilament testing kits (typically the 10-gram
    filament) for protective sensation screening — the standard, low-cost, in-visit
    tool for identifying loss of protective sensation before a patient has any symptoms, and
    a supply that should never run out given how routine the screening is.
  • Handheld Doppler devices for ankle-brachial index (ABI) and
    pulse-volume screening — identifies peripheral arterial disease, which changes both
    the wound-care and the compression-therapy plan for that patient (see below).
  • Offloading devices — total contact casting supplies or
    removable offloading walking boots/shoes, used to redistribute pressure away from a
    plantar ulcer or a high-risk pressure point. Offloading is the single highest-leverage
    intervention in diabetic ulcer healing, and an office that has to special-order the
    device after diagnosing the ulcer is losing healing time it can’t get back.
  • Wound care dressings sized and typed for diabetic foot ulcers
    specifically — moisture-retentive dressings for granulating wounds, absorptive
    dressings for exudative ones, and non-adherent contact layers, stocked as a range rather
    than one general-purpose dressing type.
  • Therapeutic footwear and diabetic inserts — extra-depth shoes
    and custom or semi-custom accommodative inserts, dispensed as a preventive measure for
    patients already identified as high-risk (prior ulcer, loss of protective sensation, foot
    deformity), before a wound develops rather than after.
  • Compression therapy supplies — graduated compression socks and
    wraps for venous insufficiency and edema management, with one hard clinical caveat:
    compression is contraindicated or requires modified, lower-pressure protocols in patients
    with significant peripheral arterial disease, which is exactly why the ABI screening

Restocking Discipline: Setting Par Levels by Category

The three categories above turn over at very different rates, and a single blanket
reorder point undersells that. Procedure consumables (blades, sutures, anesthesia
supplies, hemostatic agents) are the fastest-turning category in a busy practice and
benefit from a real par-level system tied to weekly procedure volume, checked at least
weekly rather than reordered on an ad hoc basis. Bracing inventory turns more slowly and
unevenly — a walking boot in a common size might move weekly, while a rare size or
a rigid AFO might sit for a month, which argues for tracking bracing by SKU rather than
by category so a slow-moving size doesn’t quietly go out of stock between counts.
Diabetic-foot-care screening supplies (monofilaments, in particular, which are
disposable-by-design after repeated use to remain accurate) need a standing reorder
independent of visit volume swings, since running out during a screening-heavy week is
the failure mode that actually costs a missed early diagnosis.
