What a compression sock is

A compression sock (also called a compression stocking) is a garment engineered to apply graduated pressure to the leg — tightest at the ankle and progressively looser moving up toward the calf or thigh. That pressure gradient is deliberate: it is what distinguishes a real compression garment from a plain elastic sock or a uniform-pressure support wrap, and it is what lets the garment do a specific mechanical job rather than just feel snug.

Why it exists and what problem it solves

  • DVT/VTE prophylaxis. Hospitalized, post-surgical, or otherwise immobile patients are at elevated risk of deep vein thrombosis; graduated compression stockings (often alongside pharmacologic prophylaxis or intermittent pneumatic compression) are a standard mechanical option, particularly when anticoagulation is contraindicated.
  • Chronic venous insufficiency (CVI). When leg vein valves no longer close properly, blood reflux and pooling become an ongoing condition rather than a temporary risk. Compression is a core, long-term management tool for CVI symptoms — aching, swelling, varicose veins — not a one-time intervention.
  • Post-surgical and post-procedural edema control. After vascular, orthopedic, or varicose-vein procedures, compression helps control swelling and support healing during recovery.
  • Pregnancy-related venous symptoms. Increased blood volume and reduced venous return during pregnancy commonly produce leg swelling and varicose veins that compression garments are used to manage.
  • Prevention during prolonged immobility. Long-haul travel and other extended sitting is the one context where general-purpose, lower-pressure compression wear (not necessarily a medical-grade garment) is commonly recommended.

Medical-grade compression vs. athletic and travel compression wear

These products are useful for their intended purpose — comfort on a long flight, mild support during exercise — but they are not manufactured, labeled, or regulated as a treatment for DVT prophylaxis or diagnosed venous disease.

Medical-grade graduated compression stockings and anti-embolism stockings (AES, commonly called TED hose) are a different category: they carry a specific, tested pressure grade at defined points on the leg, they are manufactured to consistent compression-class standards, and true medical-grade garments intended for a clinical indication like DVT prophylaxis or CVI management are generally treated by the FDA as a medical device — a regulatory category athletic or travel compression apparel is not held to. Anti-embolism stockings are specifically designed for non-ambulatory, bed-bound patients (the classic post-surgical hospital application), while graduated compression stockings more broadly are also used by ambulatory patients who can walk and tolerate a stronger, ongoing garment for CVI or prevention.
