Philosophy of science is the branch of philosophy that examines the foundations, methods, and implications of science itself: what makes an inquiry scientific, how scientific theories are justified by evidence, what a scientific explanation actually explains, and what science’s success tells us about the world it describes. Where a working scientist asks first-order questions within a field — what causes this disease, how old is this rock, does this drug outperform placebo — philosophy of science asks second-order questions about the whole enterprise: What distinguishes science from non-science? When is a theory confirmed rather than merely consistent with the data? Do successful theories describe a real, mind-independent world, or just save the observable phenomena? How, and how much, does scientific knowledge actually change over time?
Philosophy of science is not a critique of science from the outside, and it is not the same thing as the history of science or the sociology of science, though it draws on both. It is a normative and conceptual discipline: it asks what scientific reasoning ought to look like, what counts as good evidence, and what our best theories are entitled to claim about reality — using the tools of philosophy (careful argument, conceptual analysis, formal logic and probability) applied to real, working science rather than to invented examples.
What philosophy of science actually studies
The field organizes around a recurring set of core questions:
- The demarcation problem. What distinguishes science from non-science or pseudoscience? Karl Popper’s proposed answer — that a genuinely scientific claim must be falsifiable, capable of being shown false by some possible observation — remains the most widely known attempt, though philosophers generally agree no single criterion fully solves the problem.
- Confirmation and evidence. How does observational or experimental evidence actually support (or fail to support) a theory? This includes formal work in Bayesian confirmation theory, which models how rational belief in a hypothesis should update as new evidence arrives.
- Scientific explanation. What makes something a genuine explanation rather than just a true description — for example, whether citing a law of nature, a cause, or a unifying pattern is what does the explanatory work.
- Theory change and scientific progress. How and why theories are replaced, and whether later theories are straightforwardly better than earlier ones or simply different. Thomas Kuhn’s The Structure of Scientific Revolutions (1962) reframed this question around “paradigms” and periods of revolutionary change punctuating normal, puzzle-solving science, and remains the most cited work in the field’s history.
- Scientific realism versus anti-realism. Do successful theories give us approximately true descriptions of unobservable entities (electrons, genes, black holes), or should we only commit to what a theory says about observable phenomena, treating the rest as useful fiction?
- The role of values in science. Where objectivity is possible and where non-epistemic values (ethical, social) legitimately or illegitimately shape scientific judgment — in choice of research question, risk thresholds for accepting a result, and interpretation of ambiguous data.
The origins and development of philosophy of science
Philosophy has asked questions about the nature of knowledge and nature itself since antiquity, but philosophy of science as a distinct, professionalized field took shape in the twentieth century. The Vienna Circle, a group of philosophers and scientists (including Moritz Schlick and Rudolf Carnap) active from the 1920s, developed logical positivism — the view that meaningful statements must be either logically true or empirically verifiable, which put scientific method at the center of what counts as legitimate knowledge. Karl Popper challenged verification with falsification in the 1930s-40s. Mid-century, Willard Van Orman Quine’s holism and Thomas Kuhn’s 1962 account of paradigm shifts (alongside Imre Lakatos’s “research programmes” and Paul Feyerabend’s more radical critiques) moved the field away from purely logical reconstructions of science and toward attention to science’s actual historical and social practice — a shift that opened the door to the closely related fields described below.
How philosophy of science relates to neighboring disciplines
- Epistemology. Philosophy of science is often described as applied epistemology — general theory-of-knowledge questions (what justifies a belief, what counts as evidence) worked out specifically for the case of scientific knowledge, which is unusually well-evidenced, formalized and cumulative compared to everyday belief.
- History of science. Historians of science reconstruct what actually happened — who did what, when, and why, in its historical context — as an empirical, descriptive project. Philosophers of science use historical episodes as evidence for or against normative claims about how science should work. The two are close enough that many programs and departments combine them as “History and Philosophy of Science” (HPS).
- Sociology of science and science and technology studies (STS). Where philosophy of science asks normative questions about justification and evidence, sociology of science and STS study science as a social institution — how laboratories, funding structures, peer review, and professional incentives actually shape what gets investigated and accepted as knowledge. - Philosophy of specific sciences. Philosophy of physics, philosophy of biology, philosophy of chemistry, philosophy of psychology and philosophy of the social sciences each apply the field’s general questions to the specific conceptual puzzles of one domain — for instance, what a biological species actually is, or whether quantum mechanics requires abandoning realism about an observer-independent world.
- Research methodology. The methodological questions researchers face day to day — what counts as a well-designed study, what a hypothesis is and how it differs from a theory (see CASRAI’s hypothesis vs. theory guide) — rest on philosophy-of-science foundations even when a working researcher never engages the underlying philosophical literature directly.
Major sub-disciplines within philosophy of science
- General philosophy of science. The core cross-cutting questions above — explanation, confirmation, realism, theory structure — addressed at a level that applies across scientific fields.
- Philosophy of physics. Foundational questions raised by relativity and quantum mechanics: the nature of space and time, the interpretation of quantum theory, and whether physical law is fundamentally deterministic.
- Philosophy of biology. Conceptual questions distinctive to living systems: what natural selection actually explains, how species and biological individuals should be defined, and the status of genetic and developmental explanations.
- Philosophy of chemistry and philosophy of mathematics. Smaller but established sub-fields examining, respectively, the relationship between chemical and physical explanation, and the nature of mathematical objects and proof.
- Philosophy of psychology and cognitive science. Questions about mental representation, consciousness, and what counts as an adequate explanation of cognition and behavior — closely tied to CASRAI’s what is psychology guide.
- Philosophy of the social sciences. Whether social phenomena require distinct explanatory methods from the natural sciences, and how concepts like social structure, institution, and social kind should be understood.
- History and philosophy of science (HPS). The joint field, often housed in a single department, that combines historical case studies with philosophical analysis of them.
- Feminist philosophy of science and science-and-values scholarship. How social position and values shape what questions get asked, what counts as objectivity, and how scientific communities correct for (or entrench) bias.
- Experimental philosophy (X-Phi). A newer strand that studies philosophical and scientific intuitions empirically, using surveys and experiments rather than armchair argument alone.
The research funding landscape for philosophy of science
Philosophy of science is a small field relative to the natural sciences it studies, and most working philosophers are supported primarily through university teaching positions rather than large external grants. Where dedicated external funding exists, it comes from a narrower set of sources than in the sciences themselves:
- National Science Foundation — Science, Technology, and Society (STS) Program. Housed in NSF’s Directorate for Social, Behavioral and Economic Sciences (SBE), Division of Social and Economic Sciences, the STS program is the primary U.S. federal funding line for this field: it explicitly supports historical, philosophical, and social-scientific studies of the intellectual, material, and social facets of STEM disciplines, including ethics, equity, governance, and policy questions connected to science and technology.
- National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). As a humanities discipline, philosophy of science scholarship is eligible for NEH’s general Division of Research Programs funding lines (research fellowships and collaborative research grants), alongside history, literature, and other humanities fields — it is not the subject of a dedicated NEH program, but sits within NEH’s broader humanities-research mandate.
- Private foundations. A small number of private foundations fund foundational and philosophical questions in science on a project basis; the John Templeton Foundation is the most notable, with a long-standing program of grants for work on foundational questions at the boundaries of physics, cosmology, complexity, and philosophy of science, including projects with explicit historical or philosophical components.
- University and departmental support. Because most philosophy-of-science research does not require laboratory infrastructure, ordinary faculty research time, university research grants, sabbatical support, and graduate assistantships fund a much larger share of the field’s output than is typical in the natural sciences — a structural difference worth knowing when comparing this field’s funding landscape to a lab-based discipline.

Research methods, tools and approaches
Philosophy of science does not use laboratory equipment; its “methods” are argumentative and analytical tools applied to real scientific material:
- Conceptual and logical analysis. Careful definition and argument — clarifying what a concept like “explanation,” “law of nature,” or “natural kind” actually requires, and testing proposed definitions against counterexamples.
- Case-study analysis. Close engagement with a specific historical or contemporary scientific episode (a theory change, a controversy, a measurement practice) as evidence for or against a general philosophical claim — the primary bridge to the history of science.
- Formal methods. Probability theory and Bayesian confirmation theory, formal logic, decision theory, and model theory, used to make claims about evidence, explanation, and theory structure mathematically precise and testable for internal consistency.
- Thought experiments. Hypothetical scenarios (real or constructed) used to isolate and test intuitions about a concept under controlled, simplified conditions.
- Engagement with working science. Direct reading of the primary scientific literature, and increasingly collaboration with working scientists, to ensure philosophical claims track how a field actually reasons rather than a textbook simplification of it.
- Empirical methods (experimental philosophy). Surveys and controlled experiments that test how people (including trained scientists) actually reason about causation, explanation, and evidence, treating those intuitions as data rather than simply consulting the philosopher’s own judgment.
Career and training pathways
Training in philosophy of science almost always runs through a PhD in philosophy, though a number of institutions offer it through a joint History and Philosophy of Science (HPS) department instead — established HPS departments exist at institutions including the University of Pittsburgh, the University of Cambridge, and Indiana University Bloomington, among others. A typical doctoral path includes broad training in general philosophy (logic, epistemology, metaphysics) alongside a specialization in philosophy of science generally or of a specific science, a qualifying/comprehensive examination stage, and a dissertation defending an original position on one of the field’s core questions.
The primary professional society in the United States is the Philosophy of Science Association (PSA), which publishes the journal Philosophy of Science and holds a biennial meeting; the British Society for the Philosophy of Science (BSPS) plays the equivalent role in the UK and publishes The British Journal for the Philosophy of Science. Scholars working at the history-philosophy boundary are frequently also members of the History of Science Society (HSS). Career outcomes follow the pattern typical of a humanities PhD: the primary destination is academic teaching and research faculty positions, with a smaller number of graduates moving into science policy, science communication, publishing, bioethics-adjacent research roles, or applied work at the boundary of philosophy and a specific scientific field.
