Editorial commentary

ezDMP is a funder-focused DMP creation service that guides a researcher through a specific funder’s requirements — originally built around the directorates of the US National Science Foundation — and produces both a narrative and a structured, machine-actionable output. It was developed to offer a lighter-weight alternative to general-purpose institutional DMP platforms for researchers who need to satisfy one funder’s requirements quickly, without navigating a broader tool built to serve many funders and templates at once.

A research office is most likely to point a first-time NSF applicant toward ezDMP specifically because its guided form maps directly onto NSF directorate expectations, producing a compact plan (often around two pages) without requiring the researcher to first understand the fuller structure of an institutional platform. ezDMP also contributed to early RDA DMP Common Standard interoperability testing, confirming that its structured exports could be read by other RDA-Common-Standard-conformant tools.

How it differs from other DMP tools

  • vs. DMPRoadmap (DMPTool/DMPonline) — DMPRoadmap-based platforms are institutional and multi-funder; ezDMP is deliberately narrower and funder-template-driven.
  • vs. Argos (OpenAIRE) / DataDMP — both of those are also RDA-Common-Standard-native, but oriented toward European/EOSC integration or institutional RDM infrastructure respectively, rather than a single funder’s directorate requirements.
