Editorial commentary
DataDMP is a DMP authoring and management platform developed in Germany, built natively against the RDA DMP Common Standard rather than retrofitted to support it. It is one of several second-generation machine-actionable DMP (maDMP) tools — alongside Argos and ezDMP — that treat machine-actionability as a design starting point rather than an add-on export format. DataDMP positions the DMP as one component of a broader institutional research-data-management workflow, with links out to data inventories, institutional repositories, and reporting systems, rather than as a standalone document.
A research office is most likely to encounter DataDMP if working with a German institution or a research consortium that has adopted it to harmonise plan exports across partner sites — its RDA-Common-Standard-native design makes cross-institution comparison and aggregation of DMP content more tractable than reconciling narrative PDFs written to different funder templates. It also contributed to early cross-tool interoperability testing within the RDA DMP Common Standards Working Group, alongside the other tools implementing the same schema.
How it differs from other DMP tools
- vs. Argos (OpenAIRE) — both are RDA-Common-Standard-native and open, but Argos is OpenAIRE-operated and integrated with the European Open Science Cloud and OpenAIRE Research Graph; DataDMP has a distinct German institutional lineage.
- vs. ezDMP — ezDMP is built around a specific funder’s (originally US NSF’s) requirements; DataDMP is oriented toward institutional RDM-infrastructure integration rather than one funder’s template.
- vs. DMPRoadmap (DMPTool/DMPonline) — a different codebase and lineage entirely (DMPRoadmap is jointly UK/US-developed and retrofitted for RDA-CS support over time, rather than RDA-CS-native from the outset).
