Editorial commentary

Ultra-low temperature (ULT, -80°C) freezers are among the largest single electricity draws in a wet-lab building, running compressors continuously against a roughly 100-degree gap to ambient. Sample integrity has to be balanced against a real, measurable energy cost, not treated as free.

The setpoint decision

The single highest-leverage change is often the setpoint itself. My Green Lab and the International Institute for Sustainable Laboratories (I2SL), who jointly run the annual Freezer Challenge, have published case studies (including Sanofi Pasteur R&D) on moving general-purpose ULT storage from -80°C to -70°C for samples that tolerate it — most reagents, cell lines and many biospecimens are stable at either temperature, though some protocols and long-term biobank material are not, so the change needs sign-off from whoever owns the samples, not just facilities. Reported energy-saving estimates for the 10-degree change vary by freezer age and model; figures commonly cited in Freezer Challenge and green-lab materials fall roughly in the 20-40% range, and are worth validating against your own unit’s duty cycle rather than assumed. The mechanism holds regardless of the exact figure: compressor run-time scales with the temperature differential to the room, so closing that gap by 10 degrees reduces load.

Operational practices

Beyond setpoint, LEAF’s energy and sample-management criteria and My Green Lab’s cold-storage guidance converge on the same core practices: a named freezer owner and a digital sample inventory with a rack map, so doors open only for indexed, targeted retrieval rather than prolonged searching; scheduled defrost and coil/gasket maintenance, since frost buildup and worn door seals both increase compressor load; and periodic sample triage — reviewing what is actually still needed before authorising a replacement unit or at the end of a grant, rather than defaulting to indefinite storage. Consolidating several partially-full freezers into fewer, fuller units is another lever: a freezer draws similar power whether near-empty or full, so idle capacity is a direct, avoidable energy cost.
