Editorial commentary
Redalyc (Red de Revistas Científicas de América Latina y el Caribe, España y Portugal) is a non-profit, full-text open-access journal system launched in 2002–2003 (published sources differ on the exact year) and operated by the Universidad Autónoma del Estado de México (UAEM). It now hosts well over 1,000 peer-reviewed journals across the humanities, social sciences and natural sciences, published primarily in Spanish and Portuguese alongside English and other regional languages, and applies an editorial-quality evaluation process before admitting a title.
What Redalyc actually does, precisely
Redalyc is a full-text hosting and technical-publishing system, not only a bibliographic index — this distinguishes it from Latindex, which registers and certifies journal metadata without hosting the articles themselves. A journal admitted to Redalyc gets its content structured, hosted, and made citable and discoverable through Redalyc’s own platform, which is what makes it comparable in function (though not in governance) to SciELO.
Relationship to AmeliCA
Redalyc-UAEM is a founding partner of AmeliCA, the cooperative diamond-OA publishing-infrastructure initiative launched in 2018. AmeliCA’s own account of the relationship describes Redalyc as primarily an indexing and full-text bibliographic database, with AmeliCA the separate publishing-infrastructure and advocacy layer — including the Marcalyc XML production tooling — built on top of that base. Every Redalyc-hosted journal is diamond OA by design: no charge to read, no charge to publish.
Worked example / counter-example
A regional Mexican sociology journal admitted to Redalyc reaches readers across the Americas at no cost to either the journal’s authors or its readers. Treating a Redalyc-hosted journal as “not internationally indexed” in a hiring or promotion review, or confusing Redalyc with a commercial subscription database, misreads what it is: a non-profit academic publishing infrastructure, not a paywalled aggregator.
