Editorial commentary
Current and Pending (Other) Support is the disclosure, tied to a specific individual rather than a specific project, of every active and pending source of research support that person holds — grants, contracts, cooperative agreements, in-kind resources, and both domestic and foreign appointments — regardless of dollar value or whether the support relates to the proposal being submitted. Its purpose is to let a funder see a researcher’s full portfolio of support and commitments so reviewers can assess overlap, scientific overload, and undisclosed foreign resources before making an award.
How this differs from the other filings in this family
Three distinct disclosures are frequently confused. Current and Pending Support answers “what support does this person hold, from anywhere, right now or pending?” — filed as a standing biographical document, refreshed at each proposal and, increasingly, at award time. Foreign component disclosure answers a narrower, project-specific question — “is part of the funded project itself being physically performed outside the country?” — and is triggered by where the work happens, not by who is being compensated. In-kind contribution disclosure is not a separate form at all; it is a category of non-monetary resource (free lab access, donated materials, complimentary computing time) reported as a line item inside Current and Pending Support, not filed independently.
NSF and NIH now share an architecture, but not identical mechanics
Both agencies build Current and Pending (Other) Support through NSPM-33’s shared Common Form, generated in SciENcv. NSF required it for proposals due on or after January 30, 2023 (the fillable-PDF option was retired October 23, 2023). NIH’s equivalent mandate came later — applications with due dates on or after January 25, 2026 (NIH Guide Notice NOT-OD-26-018) — and NIH additionally hard-validates a linked ORCID iD in the Common Form’s identifier field, which NSF encourages but does not enforce. NIH separately maintains its own longer-standing Other Support disclosure, used to report and update support at time of award and in Research Performance Progress Reports — related to, but not interchangeable with, the pre-award Common Form; see also Pending grants disclosure and Active grants disclosure for the specific NIH sub-categories, and NSF Biosketch / NIH Biosketch for the paired biographical document. Current and Pending Support is the central operational mechanism through which NSPM-33‘s Tier I disclosure obligations are actually implemented.
