Examples

Worked examples

  • Is an instance

A research consortium designs a programme explicitly addressing SDG 3.4 (NCD mortality reduction).

  • Is an instance

A funder requires applicants to identify the specific SDG targets their proposal advances.

Counter-examples

Looks similar, but isn't

  • Not an instance

Adding SDG-aligned framing to a proposal post hoc without changing study design.

  • Not an instance

Claiming SDG alignment based on general field relevance rather than target-specific contribution.

Editorial commentary

SDG-aligned research differs from research that is merely mapped to SDGs after the fact: alignment implies intentional design around specific SDG targets, attention to inclusion and equity (notably the 'leave no one behind' principle), and integration with the indicator framework for accountability. The International Science Council, the UN Research Roadmap for the COVID-19 Recovery, and many funders now ask for explicit SDG-target rationale in proposals. SDG-aligned research often spans disciplines and is implementation-oriented.

The UN SDG framework

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by UN member states in 2015, sets out 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and 169 associated targets, tracked against a global indicator framework maintained by the UN Statistics Division. See CASRAI’s overview of the SDGs and individual goal entries such as SDG 17 (Partnerships), SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure), and SDG 4 (Quality Education) for target-level detail.

SDG alignment vs. SDG mapping

It is worth distinguishing SDG-aligned research from SDG mapping: mapping is the retrospective classification of already-completed research output against the SDGs (commonly done algorithmically, e.g., via publisher or bibliometric SDG classifiers), while alignment is a design-stage commitment — a study is framed around specific SDG targets from the outset, with the indicator framework itself informing what is measured and reported.

Where SDG alignment is required or requested

Beyond funder proposal requirements already noted, university ranking systems that specifically assess societal-impact performance (such as the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings) use SDG-related research output and institutional action as scored indicators, which has made explicit SDG framing increasingly relevant to institutional as well as individual research strategy — though researchers should treat “counts toward a ranking indicator” and “genuinely target-specific SDG contribution” as related but not identical claims.
