  • Chest pain, shortness of breath or stroke signs
  • Someone pulled from the sea who coughs a lot, is short of breath or is confused
  • Dengue with severe belly pain, nonstop vomiting or bleeding
  • A baby under 3 months with a fever, or a very listless child

Sick at night on the northwest coast: what to do, in order

Hatillo, Camuy and Quebradillas have no hospital, and no pharmacy counter here is open at night. All three towns are more than 35 miles in a straight line from the nearest 24-hour counter, in Ponce. So it pays to know where to go before you need it:

  1. Is it a serious emergency? Chest pain, stroke signs, a crash or a very listless child: call 911. The ambulance crew decides which hospital to use.
  2. Need an ER that is open right now? Camuy Health Services, Ave. Muñoz Rivera #63, Camuy, 787-898-2660. Its site says the ER is open 24 hours, 7 days a week. It is a community health center, not a hospital; its site does not say whether it sees children.
  3. Need a hospital? Hospital Pavía Arecibo, about 6 miles from Hatillo, has an adult ER and is on Metro Pavia's list of pediatric ERs.
  4. Not an emergency? Request a visit online 24/7 — we confirm your time by email or text. If appropriate, the doctor prescribes and we send your prescription to your pharmacy for when it opens.

How a video visit works in Hatillo, Camuy and Quebradillas

Dr. Diana Nieves Castro, MD, is a general practice physician licensed in Puerto Rico, with several years of emergency-department experience. She sees adults and children of all ages, in English or Spanish: she evaluates, diagnoses and treats, and if needed gives you a lab order for a lab near you. If appropriate, the doctor prescribes and we send your prescription to your pharmacy. We do not prescribe controlled substances. With local counters closing at 6 or 7 p.m., an evening visit means you can pick up a prescription the next day without an extra trip.

We send you a secure video link; it works on your phone, tablet or computer. Anyone under 21 needs a parent or legal guardian on the video, with photo ID. Your card is charged when you request the visit (Apple Pay or Google Pay if they appear on the payment page), with a full refund if it can't happen. A doctor's note after the visit is included; for a school or job form, see forms, US$35.

Distances are straight lines. We re-check these every quarter. See also Isabela and Rincón, Aguadilla and all areas.

  • We evaluate, diagnose and treat; if needed, we give you a lab order for a lab near you.

  • We see adults and children of all ages. Patients under 21: a parent with patria potestad (parental authority) or a legal guardian is on camera for the whole visit and shows photo ID.

  • Real-time video visit. We send you a secure video link. It works on your phone, tablet or computer.

  • If appropriate, the doctor prescribes and we send your prescription to your pharmacy. We do not prescribe controlled substances.
