Doctor in Arecibo by Video, Plus the Pavía and Susoni ERs Open at Night

Doctors' Center Hospital – Arecibo, Route 2 Km 80.1, Arecibo Medical Center, 787-650-2600. Its location listing calls it emergency care, but the hours it publishes are Monday to Sunday, 7 a.m.–11 p.m., so it is closed overnight and is not a 24-hour ER. It is not on the CMS hospital list for Arecibo. Call ahead to confirm what it treats.

It is the extended-hours option for a cut or a sprain late in the day. After 11 p.m., or for anything serious, your options are Pavía Arecibo, Susoni or 911; for anything that is not an emergency, the doctor can see you by video. Unsure which you need? Read where to go when you are sick.

The Walgreens pharmacy counters close at 8 p.m. and Doctors' Center at 11 p.m. After that, Arecibo is down to two hospital ERs. Work through it in this order:

Dr. Diana Nieves Castro, MD, is a primary care physician licensed in Puerto Rico, with several years of emergency-department experience. She sees adults and children of all ages, in English or Spanish. She evaluates, diagnoses and treats; if needed, she gives you a lab order for a lab near you, such as a strep, urine or blood test. If appropriate, the doctor prescribes and we send your prescription to your pharmacy. We do not prescribe controlled substances.

We send you a secure video link; it works on your phone, tablet or computer. You just need to be in Puerto Rico during the visit. Anyone under 21 needs a parent or legal guardian on the video, with ID. Your card is charged when you request the visit, with a full refund if it can't happen, and a doctor's note after the visit is included.

The Puerto Rico Department of Health's weekly report for week 37 (published September 23, 2026, the latest as of September 30) counts 6 dengue cases in Arecibo for weeks 1–37 of 2026, 0.65% of the island's 922 cases. The Arecibo health region, which also includes Barceloneta, Camuy, Hatillo, Manatí, Utuado and other municipios, totals 77 cases. One of 2026's four dengue-associated deaths was in that region: a 22-year-old man, in July; the report does not identify the serotype.

The CDC says warning signs usually start 24 to 48 hours after the fever breaks: belly pain or tenderness, vomiting at least 3 times in 24 hours, bleeding from the nose or gums, blood in vomit or stool, or extreme tiredness or irritability. Arecibo had 87,754 residents in the 2020 Census. PR-22 (the expressway) passes through the municipio but bypasses downtown; you reach town on PR-2, PR-10 and PR-129. Pavía Arecibo is on PR-129, Doctors' Center on PR-2, and the Ave Juan Rosado Walgreens by PR-10. The Arecibo Observatory, in Barrio Esperanza, belongs to the National Science Foundation: its radio telescope collapsed on December 1, 2020, and in 2023 NSF picked a university consortium to run an education center there, Arecibo C3 (per Wikipedia, a secondary source; we did not confirm visiting hours).

In March 2026 the Puerto Rico Senate approved Resolution 388 to investigate the Río Grande de Arecibo flood-control project, according to Metro Puerto Rico.
