Boquerón, Combate and Cabo Rojo beaches: the rip current forecast

The National Weather Service in San Juan issues a daily surf zone forecast. Cabo Rojo beaches are in its "Southwest PR" zone, with Guánica and Lajas. The forecast gives the rip current risk: at low risk, life-threatening rip currents still often occur near groins, jetties, reefs and piers; at moderate risk they are possible in the surf zone; at high risk they are likely. The NWS advises swimming only at beaches with lifeguards and checking the forecast before going in, even on a beautiful day.

For beach problems that are not serious, the doctor can evaluate you by video: stings, small reef cuts, sea urchin spines or mild heat illness. See our guides to jellyfish, sea urchins and heat illness. If someone comes out of the water struggling to breathe, confused or unconscious, call 911.
