See a Doctor in Trujillo Alto and Canóvanas: Video, ERs and Pharmacies
Before you set out to find a doctor in Trujillo Alto, know that the NeoMed ER in town is open only Monday to Friday, 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. At night and on weekends, the nearest verified 24-hour ERs are in Cupey and on Route 3 in Carolina. For a cold, fever, UTI or refill, Dr. Diana Nieves Castro, MD, sees patients of all ages by video at home.

A doctor in Trujillo Alto: the NeoMed ER keeps daytime hours
NeoMed Center Trujillo Alto. Its official page says: "Sala de Emergencias – Lunes a viernes de 6:00 a.m. a 5:00 p.m." (Monday to Friday, 6 a.m. to 5 p.m.). It is not open at night, on Saturdays or on Sundays. The page gives no address or phone.
The federal provider registry (NPI) lists it at 130 Calle Carite, Urb. Lago Alto. The phone there, 787-737-2311, is the same for every NeoMed center, so it is a central line, not the ER's. It is not affiliated with us.

Nights and weekends: the nearest 24-hour ERs
In an emergency call 911; the ambulance crew decides where to take the patient. These are hospital ERs we checked on each hospital's website:
Hospital Episcopal San Lucas Metro, Cupey (the former HIMA Cupey site), Carr. 844 Km 0.5, San Juan. Phone 787-761-8383. Its page advertises a "Sala de Emergencias 24/7" (24/7 ER) but does not say whether it sees children. More options on our San Juan neighborhoods page.
Hospital UPR Dr. Federico Trilla, Route 3 Km 8.3, Ave. 65 de Infantería, Carolina. Phone 787-757-1800. Per its website, a 24/7 ER and a separate pediatric ER. Extended-hours urgent care in the neighboring municipality is on our SJU airport-area page.
Canóvanas: a CDT we could not verify
The federal provider registry still lists a "CDT de Canóvanas" on Ave. Corchado, but that record has not been updated since 2016, and we could not confirm whether it is open, who runs it or its hours. So we do not publish its phone; we would rather not send you to a locked door. Federal hospital data (CMS) also lists no hospital in Canóvanas.
If you live in Canóvanas and it is not an emergency, the doctor sees you by video and you skip the drive on PR-3 or PR-66. If it is, call 911. Unsure which you need? Read where to go when you are sick.
Pharmacies in Trujillo Alto and Canóvanas: when the counter opens
No pharmacy in either town has a 24-hour counter, and Farmacias Caridad has no store in either. From the Walgreens locator, which shows opening times only:

Walgreens, 150 Route 857, Carolina, 2 miles from Canóvanas per the locator, 787-701-0808, and Walgreens, 200 Ave Fragoso, Carolina, 4.7 miles from Trujillo Alto: the stores are open 24 hours, but the pharmacy counters open at 7 a.m.
Farmacia Caridad Colobos, 830 Route 857, Carolina, 787-701-2190: the shop floor is open until 10 p.m., but the counter closes at 7 p.m. on weekdays and 5 p.m. on weekends.
Nearest 24-hour pharmacy counter to Trujillo Alto: Walgreens, 2505 Carr 841, Guaynabo (787-287-0528), or Walgreens, 101 Carr 1, in Caguas (787-744-2905), both 6.1 miles per the Walgreens locator (not drive times) and both with a 1:30–2 a.m. meal break. From Canóvanas, the locator showed no 24-hour counter among its five nearest results.
Sick at night in Trujillo Alto or Canóvanas
Night starts early here: NeoMed closes at 5 p.m. on weekdays and is shut all weekend, and no pharmacy counter in either town opens overnight. Work through it in this order:
- Is it an emergency? Chest pain, shortness of breath, stroke signs, or very high or low blood sugar with confusion: call 911. San Lucas Metro in Cupey and Federico Trilla on Route 3 are open 24 hours.
- A very sick child? Federico Trilla has a separate pediatric ER. For anything that is not an emergency, the doctor sees children of all ages by video: see video visits for children.
- Need a prescription filled tonight? The nearest 24-hour counters to Trujillo Alto are on PR-841 in Guaynabo and PR-1 in Caguas, closed 1:30–2 a.m. Call before you drive.
- Something over the counter? The Walgreens stores on Route 857 and Ave Fragoso in Carolina are open 24 hours.

Doctor in Trujillo Alto by video: how we care for you
Dr. Diana Nieves Castro, MD, is a primary care physician licensed in Puerto Rico, with several years of emergency-department experience. She sees adults and children of all ages by video, in English or Spanish. She evaluates, diagnoses and treats; if needed, she gives you a lab order for a lab near you, such as a strep, urine or blood test. If appropriate, the doctor prescribes and we send your prescription to your pharmacy. We do not prescribe controlled substances.
We send you a secure video link; it works on your phone, tablet or computer. You just need to be in Puerto Rico during the visit. Anyone under 21 needs a parent or legal guardian on the video, with ID. Your card is charged when you request the visit, with a full refund if it can't happen, and a doctor's note after the visit is included.

Trujillo Alto and Canóvanas: Lake Carraízo, PR-181 and the racetrack
Trujillo Alto runs along PR-181, its main north–south road, and its Carraízo barrio holds the Lago Loíza dam, built in 1953–54, which supplies San Juan's water. Its barrios include Saint Just, Carraízo, Cuevas and La Gloria. Canóvanas is home to Hipódromo Camarero, Puerto Rico's only horse racetrack; PR-3 crosses the municipio, and PR-66 was extended into it in 2012 (per Wikipedia, a secondary source).
Per the Census Bureau, Trujillo Alto had 66,816 residents in 2024, 23.3% of them 65 or older. Canóvanas had 41,512 and skews younger, with 20.3% aged 65 or older. Dengue in Trujillo Alto and Canóvanas
According to the Puerto Rico Department of Health's weekly report for week 37 (published September 23, 2026, the latest as of September 30), Trujillo Alto has 5 dengue cases so far in 2026 and Canóvanas 2, low next to the 118 in Caguas, the municipio with the most cases on the island.
